Kenzie: New Years Day

by Camille Diamzon

Our first day of 2018 was spent at Coogee Beach. We arrived at 9:30am to an empty beach, set up our tents and umbrellas and by 11am, it was jam packed! 2018 greeted us with a scorcher and SPF50+ was a need that day. Kenzie wore her mermaid bathing suit and hat from Seed Kids (which we love!) gifted by her godparents (she’s so spoiled!). It was Kenzie’s first time at a beach and she didn’t hate it but she didn’t love it either. She loves standing and playing in the sand and although she is a water baby who loves long baths, she hated the cold water and cried when she was dipped in for too long.

We spent the day with my parents, my sister and her in-laws and my bestie/Kenzie’s godfather. It was a good start to 2018. Our New Years Eve celebration was spent at home waiting for the countdown, playing the worst version of Monopoly (Gamer Edition) and watching the fireworks on the television while Kenzie slept through it all. We were desperate to be out of the house on new years day!

That day got hot so quickly and made Kenzie very tired and took a nap in the shade for an hour with my mum. The beach life is definitely not for Kenzie (yet) but I’m hoping she’ll learn to love it. Ramon’s definitely not a beach person but he doesn’t ever want to miss out on any “firsts” for Kenzie. We usually avoid trips to Eastern Suburb beaches as they get crowded very fast and the “cool” breeze is non-existent that day. Also, parking is hard to find if you don’t get there early. Luckily, getting there at 9:30am means parking is plentiful!

We usually drive up to The Entrance North, up towards the Coast when we go to the beach. The breeze is amazing and it’s empty, you feel like you have your own slice of paradise. It’s so relaxing and all you want to do is lie back, listen to the waves and tuck into a good book. The sand is also so much nicer, it’s the sand that doesn’t stick to you or pile up inside your bathing suit. Kenzie was covered in sand and her swimming nappy was filled with it. It was hilarious because she didn’t seem to mind.

We’ll definitely take a trip to The Entrance North when the weather settles. It’s been far too hot with yet another heatwave in Sydney. It’s been consistently over 30 degrees and very humid. Kenzie already has such sensitive skin (eczema which is finally under control and sensitivity to dairy) and we don’t want to risk her getting burnt.

We’re so happy to have taken Kenzie out on the first day of the new year, especially to an activity she had never done before and doing it with family. We have so many more “firsts” for Kenzie, we’re looking forward to it!
