Kenzie: Seven Weeks Old

by Camille Diamzon

The grandparents officially miss Kenzie and cannot wait to see her next month! We plan on coming with Ramon to Brisbane as he needs to travel for work, travelling with a baby, it’s a pet peeve for some travellers so I’m researching a whole lot of tips and advice to get through the flights without a screaming baby.

So far, here is her tally:
Nappy Changes: 105
Sleep: 90 hours
Feeds: 49

She’s finally sleeping through the night for 5-8 hours straight! It’s been incredible! I do wake every 2-3 hours to check on her and to see if she needs a feed. Some nights I have to wake her with a nappy change and a feed (to relieve the pain). During the day, she’s still wide awake for long periods but she’s starting to smile more often and it’s surreal! I cannot wait till she starts smiling more and the giggles! My heart can’t take it! She makes it so full.

We no longer have an issue with the dummy, she now takes NUK, Tommee Tippee and Gumdrop. It’s been an absolute blessing, especially when we are out and in the car.

Camomile oil used externally combined with Infant’s Friend orally has proven to help with wind and vowel movements. Now we just have to tackle acid reflux which has been getting better since I have removed dairy and limited sugar from my diet.

Kenzie is growing so fast she is officially spilling out of her 0000/newborn clothes! That only took 2.5 weeks! Soon I’ll need to start donating baby clothes.

Her eczema that flared up a couple of weeks ago and dried skin have cleared up thanks to breastmilk and we still use bath time as our secret weapon to settle a super unsettled Kenzie.

It’s immunisation week and I was extremely nervous for Kenzie. Not only can complications can arise, it may also affect how she is currently behaving for a few days. She was a trooper! After being unsettled from getting bored of waiting for the nurse to get back from her 30 minute break, Kenzie was ready to get her vaccinations. The needle is huge, personally, too big for a newborn! You’d think that after so many years, scientists would have come up with a better and less painful way to give us vaccinations! She took the oral vaccination just fine (I think she got used to taking medicine orally because she take Vitamin D and Infants Friend daily via a dropped) but those cries after her vaccination were piercing. Ramon and I had to look away. It was her “I’m in so much pain” cry, one that absolutely breaks your heart 100 times over and over again and you just have to keep reminding yourself that this is a good thing for her. When we got home, she was super drowsy but would wake up every 20-60 minutes screaming her lungs out like she was in pain over 5 hours until she finally settled back into her routine overnight. You feel absolutely helpless in these situations and I can’t believe we have to do it all over again when she is 4 months old!

This newborn stage is supposed to be the “easy” stage and Ramon and I have been building up the strength for the next stages to come.
