Kenzie: Sixteen Weeks Old

by Camille Diamzon

FOUR MONTHS! I can’t believe it! Some days I’m still pinching myself that Kenzie’s here and part of our lives. This month means she’s ready to tackle purée and have her second lot of vaccinations. We’ve still been trying our very hardest with the funniest faces we can pull so we can squeeze a giggle out of her! We have our phones ready to ship out to record the moment.

So far, here is her tally:
Nappy Changes: 52
Sleep: 96 hours
Feeds: 83

This week started off with a notification from our Wonder Weeks app reminding us that Leap 4 is approaching. Kenzie started this week with a broken night sleep which has become so rare that we knew something was wrong. She was in so much pain and after a drop of paracetamol, she calmed down so quickly! We think she may be teething as she’s been putting everything she can into her mouth and munching down really hard. When we checked inside her mouth, we found it! HER FIRST TOOTH! It’s on the bottom of her mouth, how exciting!!! It’s very small but it’s there! Our little munchkin is developing so quickly.

We found that Kenzie adores Barney! It’s the only show that will calm her down. She absolutely loves that purple dinosaur and all his songs. Car rides are smoother and it looks like she’s concentrating so hard when watching. It’s so adorable! We do limit her “Barney Time” to maximum an hour a day. Thank goodness for YouTube clips that have Barney episodes on loop. With over 100+ million views, I don’t think Kenzie’s the only child who’s fallen in love with Barney!

We’ve booked her vaccination appointment and check up for the first week of December. I’m hoping the added cusion on her super chunky thighs will minimise the pain she would feel. No matter how much I was pricked and prodded while pregnant (which was a lot) I’m still not used to needles and I still find the initial jab painful. I hope our little girl is stronger than I am!

This week, Kenzie bid farewell to my Aunty who has helped us so much in raising her. Thanks to the advancements in technology, we’ll keep in touch via Facebook. I can’t stress enough how much help we got from my Aunty. I was able to do day-to-day activities like go to the toilet and shower during the day! As soon as you have a child, these activities become luxuries! We already miss her like crazy! Kenzie loves her so much, she’s always got such a large smile on her face, she’s always talking to my Aunty and she’s so comfortable with her that she’s able to nap with her. I’ll definitely make sure she’ll always keep her in her memories as she grows up and make sure that no amount of distance will affect the bond the have built (even if it means we have to teach her how to speak Tagalog)!

Kenzie’s arms have flared up with eczema and we’ve tried moisturisers and Bepanthen to help get rid of them. Unfortunately, it’s getting worse so we’ve started to rub breastmilk at night and add breastmilk to her daily bath. It seems to help. We finish off bath time with a massage with Gaia baby massage oil. Hopefully it’ll clear up. It definitely does not help that we’ve got a week-long heatwave in Sydney at the moment.

After countless tries, we were unsuccessful at getting Kenzie to take the bottle the past 3 weeks. We were determined to keep trying again and again! She chews on the teat and squeezes milk into her mouth and swallows but she does not suck the teat. Then, out of nowhere she latched on and took the bottle like a pro! She’s loving the Pigeon Soft Touch bottle. We’re going to make sure she has a bottle of expressed milk twice a day and continue this as a habit before upgrading the teat to a faster flow. Definitely feels like a win this week!

As far as sleeping in her crib, we’re having luck with her daytime naps! Unfortunately, due to her mild wind colic, night times are still difficult but we’re slowly getting there. We know that Leap 4 would make it harder as she goes through this large development. Bella has decided to move into the crib temporarily at night.

Kenzie’s been so spoiled by her grandparents and aunties. December will surely be Christmas outfit time! She’s growing alarmingly fast that after a week or two of wearing the clothes, it’s too tight on her! We’re getting her ready for her first photo with Santa and we finally found a place that personalises ornaments to start the annual Christmas tradition for Kenzie. We love this time of year and we have no doubt that she will love it too.

We’re still impatiently waiting for her first real giggle. So far we’re getting a lot more smiles and high pitched screams, louder burps and very loud adult-like farts. Hopefully next week!
