Kenzie: Thirty Weeks Old

by Camille Diamzon

Just like that, we are in in the thirties!

This week started off with a trip to the park in 38 degree weather. We do not see the end of summer in sight but I’m determined to fulfil every promise I make my daughter so if that means I promised to take her to the park that day, I will! However, I failed as a mom and didn’t consider that heat rash was a serious thing. When she got home, her face and body was covered in red blotches and I worried she was either bitten by something or allergic to something. It was none! It was due to my negligence. Again, you live and learn but silly mistakes like this make me feel less of a mom.

So far, here is her tally:
Nappy Changes: 45
Sleep: 92 hours
Feeds: 92

We took Kenzie to Auburn Botanical Gardens and it was such a beautiful little garden! We loved it and can’t wait to go back again. It would have been perfect if it weren’t for the heat. It was our first time visiting the gardens and we thought it was stunning and picturesque. We love how there is a children’s play area too and Kenzie loved being in the swing.

I promised Kenzie I would take her swimming again and we went twice this week. Ramon finally went into the water with us and got to witness just how happy Kenzie is in the water. She still squeals, blows raspberries, kicks and smiles her big toothless smile. We dunked her underwater for the first time ever and we recorded the moment with the GoPro. It’s amazing how far technology has come and the quality of footage you can get under water. Kenzie did not cry at all. She went under and opened her eyes! Yes, she closed her eyes as she went under and then opened them when she was under the water. As she emerged she looked shocked. But got over it when a few splashes in the water and went about to enjoy the rest of her swim.

The last day of summer was a scorcher and Kenzie accompanied me on a meeting with a client. She was so well behaved and hope she won them over so I can close the sale! I’m so happy that clients and potential clients understand my situation of being a full-time mom while trying to run a business. I hope she knows I’m doing it for her and trying to build a foundation for our family. Working out a balance between raising Kenzie and doing business activities has been hard and Kenzie always takes priority every time.

The clothes basket was my best friend for a couple of weeks as Kenzie loved being inside and played with her toys inside however, this week she learned how to climb out of it! I freaked out! I wasn’t worried as this little girl can’t crawl or stand on her own yet but out of nowhere, she pulled herself up and put her leg up and over and ended up on her tummy on the floor outside of the basket. What a clever little girl!

Not only was Kenzie able to climb out of a clothes basket, she is now able to put her own dummy in her mouth. It’s amazing how quickly she can develop in a week. I was so impressed, I took out her dummy and told her to do it again, and do my surprise, she did! It’s been very handy as during car rides, when she is tired, she will grab her dummy, put it in her mouth and doze off to sleep. Ramon and I don’t sit with her in the backseat so that she won’t get used to having someone always be there with her. Nursery rhymes are still a must on car rides. It’s our secret weapon!

This week, I continued to focus on her walking and standing while assisted. I tried to work on her balance by pulling her up with my index fingers, holding them up till she has found her footing and letting them go quickly so she can stand on her own. She would be able to stand for a full second before leaning to one side and I’ll catch her. Her confidence is shot because she gets scared when I do it. She can balance while holding only one finger but she is very hesitant holding herself up with no assistance yet. We’re slowly getting there. Kenzie still squeals with glee when she walks around and slaps the coffee table and mirrors when she’s standing. She’s finally learned she can move the walker and is walking about (in absolutely no direction at all) in the walker. Getting her to follow a slice of potato usually helps get her moving.

This week we monitored Kenzie as there was a Listeria outbreak with Rockmelons. Kenzie had Rockmelon recently and we’ve been looking out for symptoms of the bacteria outbreak. We’re hoping she isn’t sick but apparently it takes a few weeks for symptoms to appear. I have my fingers and toes closed that she’s ok and haven’t been affected by the outbreak. When my mum and I read the article, we were so concerned and check Kenzie right away.

Kenzie listens to nursery rhymes every day. I can’t stress enough that it’s every single day. If it’s not playing on the tv, it’s playing off a phone or iPad or we’re singing it and it’s starting to take a toll on us. We’re going to try transition her back to mainstream music for the sake of our sanity and the sanity of our household. Ramon, mum, dad, brother and brother’s girlfriend have been humming or singing nursery rhymes too!

This week flew by too quickly and can’t wait to see what next week has in store for us. Everyday is an adventure!
