Kenzie: Twenty Three Weeks Old

by Camille Diamzon

Kenzie is twenty three weeks old and we are slowly inching towards her halfway mark! There are definitely not enough hours in the day to take everything all in.

So far, here is her tally:
Nappy Changes: 45
Sleep: 93 hours
Feeds: 95

Kenzie has been a bit of a bookworm this week finishing Toy Story, and 101 Dalmatians so we’re out buying her more books. In the meantime, I have been reading her chapters from The Wonder Weeks book. She doesn’t seem to mind.

We have decided to stop solids. After a week of solids, Kenzie was having difficult sleeping at night as she was extremely gassy and was having trouble burping and farting. She would wake up crying in pain and would only stop after releasing the gas from her stomach. We’ve had to reintroduce Infant’s Friend during her final feed at night to help her sleep through. We are going to try solids again when her stomach is further developed at six months. Instead, we will allow her to taste via a lick instead of feeding her spoonfuls and via food net feeders. We have discovered she has a skin intolerance to dairy such as ice cream and yoghurt where she will flare up around her mouth with a red rash that lasts 30 minutes.

As we passed through Leap 4 (also known as “the most difficult leap”), we didn’t experience any sleep regression and Kenzie still sleep so 9-11hours straight at night however, we are bracing ourselves for this to change with Leap 5 which is fast approaching. She has been more clingy and more wary of who is holding her so we think Leap 5 is just around the corner.

Kenzie is a chatterbox and she is still trying to figure out what the tickling feeling is as she either laughs or screams but both with a smile on her face. She absolutely loves her Jolly Jumper! We try to get her off and she continues to jump and will eventually tell us when she is tired or we stop her because without fail, she poops while jumping in the Jolly Jumper. Sometimes it’s so much it’s running down her leg and she’s still jumping for joy without a care in the world! If we take her off too early, she will guide us to pull her up onto her legs while she bounces on the bed or our laps.

She still loves her toes! She is constantly touching or chewing on her toes. It’s so cute and I’m in awe with how flexible babies are. I’ve read that we should be introducing a “favourite toy” at this stage but Kenzie loves everything equally and will happily settle with whatever toy you give her.

Kenzie is obsessed with nursery rhymes and we sing her number and alphabet rhymes during her morning and night stretches. It helps so much with settling her and is a godsend in the car! We no longer have to have one person sitting in the back with her as she is not happy playing with her toys and listening to us sing to her. Her bedtime songs are “If we hold on together”, “I don’t wanna miss a thing”, “God must have spent a little more time on you”, “Can’t take my eyes off of you” and “Beautiful soul”.

This week, everyone is back at work and my week started with our cat, Bella dashing into the house with muddy paws, our dog, Delius peeing all over the floor in excitement from seeing Bella and Kenzie with a pooh explosion all over her booster seat and clothes. It took me over an hour to clean up and made me realise we will definitely re-think getting a dog as soon as we move interstate. We’ve decided to wait till Kenzie is older and understands responsibilities before delving into getting another pet.

Australia Day is in a couple of weeks and we are planning a family outing and a walk around a lake. Hopefully the weather is nice to use. Lately we’ve either had extremely hot (record breaking) heat, very humid days with thunder and lightening or rain. It’s been difficult to be outside and our plans of walking daily around the park this year has suffered. Kenzie gets so bored inside the house. Hopefully we’ll be able to get out of the house more next week.
