Kenzie is 47 weeks old and we have been chasing after her on a daily basis and the child-proofing measures will be starting soon as she’s understanding the concept of doors and drawers. It feels like only yesterday she wasn’t able to hold her head up! Where has the time gone? It was only last week that I was so excited to see her turn one and was adamant that I wouldn’t miss her being so little, but I do! Looking back, I know I documented every week but I don’t feel like it was enough, I should have taped a GoPro on me so I can relive every moment (the good and bad)!
So far, here is her tally:
Nappy Changes: 45
Sleep: 102 hours
Feeds: 93
This week Kenzie has been walking and crawling non-stop. She’s so determined to walk more and more and is slowly building up her confidence. She loves walking on carpet and on the bed. We have to make sure we’re alert and watching her as she stands on her own and walks towards you and falls into you to catch her. We’ve often caught her attempting to walk on her own and falling forward, slowly learning that the books and blocks she falls on will not catch her fall. She’s also been destroying her pop-up books and several other books as she turns the pages with too much strength. This week, she’s also learned the concept of “mine”. We’re trying to teach her to share but it’s proven difficult.
We attended our first mom group this week. I have been so terrified of being judged by other moms and have refused to go to mom groups. Especially as she is approaching her first birthday. But when J would take Kenzie to the playground, she would love seeing all the other kids playing and I didn’t want to deprive her from experiencing friendships at a young age. WE LOVED IT! All the moms are so supportive! It was very unlike reviews and forums and articles of what other moms experienced at all. We’ll definitely be going on a regular basis. Kenzie loved being in the company of kids, she although she was antisocial at first, she started to warm up to the kids and started to understand the concept of playing.
Kenzie’s had a huge dose of playtime with other kids as we caught up with friends and their kids. She still shows “Stranger Danger” and clinginess but as soon as she gets her hands on a book or blocks or is able to crawl freely in a play area, she forgets I’m there (till she sees me again). I take full advantage when my friends want to hold Kenzie and play with her as I can finish drinking my coffee or finish eating my food without it going cold.
This week, Kenzie stopped babbling and I was googling like a mad woman to see what was wrong with her. I can sometimes freak out over small things (not sometimes, most of the time) and without google and forums and access to read what other parents have experienced, I’d be the mom at the doctor’s every day! I was so happy to learn that it was only because she concentrating on other developments. This week, it’s her walking and crawling. She seems like she wants to master it quickly and she’s doing a good job as she zooms past us as she moves from one side of the room to another. Just when I thought she would stop babbling for a few weeks, she started making very high pitched squealing noises in between “Mama” babbles.
Her 2nd tooth has almost cut through! It’s been very sore as she continues to munch down on her teethers and dummies to relieve her discomfort. Her tooth has been growing crooked and we may have to look into braces or her in the future (thank goodness for health insurance cover) as we have a history of crooked teeth on both sides of the family.
I had a sneak peek of her first birthday letterpress invitations and they look amazing! I know that Facebook event invitations and online invitations are the “norm” but I love keepsakes and making memory boxes and this one is definitely going in there. I don’t know how I feel about printing out a webpage as a memory, I would rather a physical invitation that I can show her when she is older. The invitations look absolutely amazing and I can’t wait to pick them up next week. I’m so excited! I get so giddy when it comes to stationery.
This week, we are trialing a cream from Tickles Skincare. Kenzie’s nappy has been giving her a bit of a rash around the waist and we may have to change her to a size 4 nappy (10-15kg). She is currently on size 3 (6-11kg) and the thigh and waistband is a little snug. Previously, we have been using MooGoo and Milk & Co. We’re crossing our fingers and toes that it works! Skin problems have plagued her since she was born. It would be so good to find a permanent solution, her skin is so fussy.
We’ve officially booked our Brisbane trip in July for our expo and I’ve started pre-packing one huge bag just for our stand. We’re investing so much in this, we’re hoping it’ll pay off. It’s a risk but what’s life without taking any risks right? Our fingers and toes are crossed it’ll be good!
This week, my stress levels have been higher than normal. There is a massive gap between how we’re raising Kenzie and how my parents raised me and my siblings. There is a cultural difference where they were able to afford help and we’re raising our child on our own full time. In Philippines, we were raised by a nanny. We can’t afford $100k a year for a nanny in Australia.
Kenzie is back to 2 naps a day and uninterrupted night sleep. We have noticed she is getting cold at night so we do carefully and safely tuck her blanket a little higher. This winter has been cold! It’s been reaching as low as 2 degrees at night and in the early mornings. Our heater has been on every day, climate control is amazing!
It’s been a while since we’ve gone swimming so we decided to fill the bathtub for Kenzie. Unfortunately, she hated it and was terrified! Usually, she loves the water and she used to love the bath. Even when I got in with her, she was in hysterics and just wanted to be in her baby tub. I don’t know how she will feel getting back in the pool. We’re going to try again next week now that Kenzie is feeling better again. Let’s hope our water baby still has some love for the pool!
We’re going to enjoy this peace before Leap 8 comes along and looking forward to the challenges week 48 has for us.
