Kenzie: Fourteen Weeks Old

by Camille Diamzon

Since Kenzie’s come into our lives, our phone capacity has been dwindling and we’ve purchased additional storage on iCloud. There is not a day we don’t take at least one photo or video of her. Looking back at how quickly she has grown over these past 14 weeks and it’s an incredible transformation. Babies grow so quickly! Moms keeps telling me “I miss having a baby” and I can definitely understand why. Newborns are so precious!

So far, here is her tally:
Nappy Changes: 56
Sleep: 85 hours
Feeds: 73

What can I say? Weeks 13 and 14 have become blurs. Trying to teach Kenzie to sleep in the crib and take a bottle when she is more developed has proven to be extremely difficult. We’re trying to create habits and put her in a routine that doesn’t involve her getting used to being carried and sleeping on us in an upright position. Let me tell you, it’s easier to teach a dog how to sit than teach a baby! She is developing so quickly that she’s starting to learn how to be in control. At the start of the week we snapped her fake-crying when Ramon and I are nearby! If we are elsewhere, she is settled in her bouncer but as soon as she sees us, she wants to be picked up! Our cheeky little monkey!

We have been concerned that her silent reflux had returned as she is refusing to be put down on her back and she wriggles a lot before a big burp or fart is released. It also doesn’t help that my parents are nagging us about seeing a GP and scaring us into thinking something is wrong whenever a baby cries. The GP has ruled out reflux and has advised it’s a very mild case of wind colic that should fix itself when she is 4 months old. The doctor did a full check up and our baby is a whopping 5.8kgs and she has healthy lungs and a healthy heart. It’s comforting to hear and has cleared a lot of worries we had.

We attended our Baptism Class this week and got some very good advice from a couple who told us to trust your instincts. We are constantly bombarded with unwelcome “advice” on raising our child and feel like we are being judged on decisions we have made. This couple told us they received unwarranted advice and as new parents, the best thing you can do is to trust yourself. This is a relief! Ramon and I are learning each and everyday as we are first time parents.

Everyday we are working with Kenzie to build up her mental development. This means helping her to reach and grasp for her toys, constantly talk to her and the dreaded tummy time. She still absolutely hates tummy time but tolerated it for longer each day. She’s grasping and holding onto her toys when they are nearby and she’s found her hands which end up in her mouth. She has started to put her toys in her mouth and she would rather her toy or fist in her mouth than her teethers.

Kenzie took her first ferry ride this week over to our beloved Cockatoo Island. She loves being in the outdoors and was so well behaved the whole trip, including the ride home! Just wish we weren’t so far away from there. It’s so peaceful and relaxing on that Island and a nice getaway from the dreaded busy and fast-paced Sydney.

This week we discovered Kenzie’s ability to be scared. Our family dog, Delius had his birthday and was gifted a bright green, squeaky, loud pig. Every time it gets near her she pulls a sad face and starts crying real tears! It’s so cute but my heart breaks when you see her smile turn into a sad face.

We’ve collected a few Christmas and New Years outfits for Kenzie’s first celebrations as well as getting ready for her baptism and I’vd already started planning her first birthday (hey, with one income, the better prepared we are to help spread the budget, he better!). These are such big milestones in her life!

Bring on Week 15!
