Kenzie: Thirteen Weeks Old

by Camille Diamzon

It’s been 13 beautiful weeks with our gorgeous Mackenzie and our journey has been so fulfilling. Watching our baby grow and seeing her smile and cry and scream and sleep and changing the 1000th diaper puts a smile on our face. Some hours in the day really take a toll on you where you feel like a failure as a parent and the other hours feel like you were born to bring this human into this life.

So far, here is her tally:
Nappy Changes: 57
Sleep: 89 hours
Feeds: 81

This week her screams have gotten louder, she is squealing more often and her voice is maturing. We wonder what her first words are going to be and with my potty mouth, her first word may not be something we’ll be willing to advertise.

Kenzie has started to feed less frequently but for longer periods. We have started to see a pattern with her feeds and it’s helped us time her feeds, naps and bed time. We cannot live without the Sprout mobile application. It’s helped us plan our days, especially on days we need to be out for several hours.

Her legs have gotten stronger and she can stand on her own for half a second before she sits down. While in my tummy, her kicks were so strong and you would see her foot potruding from my skin. We knew her legs were strong but didn’t realise how strong till she was finally out. We make it part of her daily exercise routine to strengthen her legs as well as her arms, back, neck and shoulders. She is still refusing to love tummy time and still screams into her play mat when she is put down onto her tummy.

This week her naps have decreased in duration. We used to get 1-3 hours from her during the day but now she is back to her usual 10-30 minute naps. It’s definitely never the same every day/week/month! She has become more unsettled during the day and as we were trying to figure out why, our Wonder Weeks App sends us an alert that she’s entered Leap 3 which means even more cuddles, attention and patience is needed to ride out this period.

This week has been difficult! Kenzie is refusing to sleep in her crib and take the bottle. This means we’re back to teaching her all these habits again. Oh boy, it’s going to be tough!

We have finally locked in her Baptism date and we’ve attended the course to make sure we raise her as best as we can in a Catholic household. Selecting Godparents for Mackenzie has been extremely challenging. We have been tossing up between a few people since before she was conceived! To Ramon and I, selecting the right Godparents is a very important task as these people will be who our daughter will be turning to for guidance and they will be helping us raise her to be the best person she can be.

This week really kicked our butt! Wonder what week 14 has in store for us!
