Kenzie: One Week Old

by Camille Diamzon

It’s been one week since Kenzie graced us with her presence a week short of her due date and we feel like time has flown by so quickly!

So far, here is her tally:
Nappy Changes: 46
Sleep: 88 hours
Feeds: 127

Yes, she’s definitely a growing girl with one heck of a grip and super strong kicks!

Unfortunately, after her first night at the hospital, she failed her hearing test. My heart sank and I was so worried. We were advised that it’s common and may be due to a build up of fluid in the ears from the water birth. We were advised to feed to get rid of the fluid build up and rerun for a repeat screening. When we returned for a repeat hearing test, she passed with flying colours!

Day two and three had us so worried again as Kenzie developed jaundice and was required to have blood tests to check her levels and she was required to stay on a Bilisoft blanket (phototherapy) for 48 hours. As she had to wear eye masks for those two days, it was so hard not being able to look into her beautiful eyes. We needed to record her temperature before and after feeds, length of feeds and her wet and poopy nappies. The aim was to flush out the jaundice through her wet and poopy nappies.Β On Day four she was allowed off the blanket as her jaundice levels were down and the phototherapy worked!

It’s been an amazing week with Kenzie and we’re so happy to have her in our arms. She’s still so little and fragile but all we want to do is hold her and never left her go!

We managed to successfully feed her from the bottle as Ramon was desperate to be able to feed and calm her down too and we learned that she hates the dummy.

We experienced her first poo explosion, the fear of cutting her nails and learning her wee and poopy faces.

If we were to give anyone one piece of advice, it’s to do away with you crib and invest in a bassinet. We have been encouraged by our midwife to do as much skin-to-skin with Kenzie for the first couple of weeks. We definitely won’t say no to that!
