Kenzie: Twenty One Weeks Old

We have reached twenty one weeks with our beautiful Mackenzie and this week, she was Baptised into the Catholic Church. She is one blessed baby with eight godparents who will be guiding her through life.

So far, here is her tally:
Nappy Changes: 45
Sleep: 90 hours
Feeds: 90

Kenzie is starting to copy our actions! Whether it be drinking from a bottle, jumping, smiling, singing or patting the table, she’s watching our every move and attempts to do it herself. Her motor skills still need a lot of work but it’s getting better each week. Her hand-eye coordination and strength has improved so much she’s able to take apart some of her toys.

With all her new gifts, we’ve arranged for a crossfit course for her to help with her development. She’ll start off on her back with a play gym, then onto tummy time with her spinning play gym, then working on her legs by jumping on the jolly jumper followed by story time and flash cards. Unfortunately, she will only tolerate each activity for a few minutes at a time but I’ve put it on rotation so hopefully the consistency would help.

Twenty one weeks on and her nails are growing faster than ever! I have to cut her nails twice a week as Kenzie’s formed a habit of scratching her face when she becomes impatient and frustrated. We’re afraid she’s figuring out how to get her own way and we’re trying to get ahead of it. We can distinguish the difference between real cries with tears and her fake cries with no tears but still don’t know how to calm her down without giving in to what she wants (whether it be a cuddle, to be carried, to stand up etc).

This week didn’t go by as easy as previous weeks. She’s been very vocal and has been difficult to put down for naps. Some days it will take us almost 2 hours to put her down for a nap only for her nap to last 20 minutes. She’s been moving side to side a lot so it’s been difficult to change her nappies and some nights, she wails in her sleep for a few seconds. Every week has been different from the last and we’re learning new things every day. Although we have our difficult moments, we’ve also loved watching Kenzie develop, especially when she interacts with our dog and cat, splashes about in her bath and walking proper strides when assisted.

This week, Kenzie met another baby her age (one week apart) and it was the most hilarious encounter ever! Kenzie is much chubbier in comparison and when they got together side by side, she smiled as the baby boy looked at her. Kenzie reaches out to grab his arm, he let her. Then Kenzie brings his arm up and pulls it towards her and out of nowhere starts to bite him! Yes, she was munching on another baby! The little boy screamed and started crying and wouldn’t look at Kenzie without crying. It was so precious and hilarious! She just gazes up with a “what did I do?” look. Oh, the innocence!

Kenzie’s had to say goodbye to some of her family this week as they flew back interstate. We all miss them so much already and can’t wait to be together again. Hopefully the next time they see her, she’ll be walking and will be more playful.

The new year is fast approaching and it’s already going to be a memorable one. We plan on celebrating the first day of 2018 at the beach (depending on Sydney’s erratic weather). In 2018, Kenzie will turn one, she’ll be a flower girl for the first time at her uncles wedding and we’re moving interstate! There is so much to look forward to.
