Kenzie: Fifteen Weeks Old

by Camille Diamzon

Oh my, week fifteen! Our little smiling dim-sim is still filling our hearts with so much happiness, covering our fingers in poop and holding conversations with us about her unicorn friend named Fred. Yes, we have a wild imagination!

So far, here is her tally:
Nappy Changes: 56
Sleep: 85 hours
Feeds: 79

This week started off with Kenzie’s flared eczema on her forehead. When she was a few weeks old, she didn’t understand or know what to do with that “itchy” feeling. Now, we’ve had to co-sleep with her so that we can hold her hands down when she is trying to scratch her face for comfort. She wakes herself up when she itches too aggressively. We’ve kept her nails super short and Kenzie’s learned to rub her face with the back of her hand instead of with her nails. However, all this discomfort means we’ve had to put a pause on her sleeping her crib for a couple of days but we’ve made progress with Kenzie now napping during the day in her crib. We’re slowly but surely getting there!

We’ve started Infant’s Friend again as she’s started to become gassy again and we’ve found it to be a godsend at night. A few burps and she sleeps like a dream at night. By the end of the week she’s given us cues when she’s been gassy and to put her upright for her loud Homer Simpson like burps.

After many tears, we’ve decided to try a different brand bottle as Kenzie is still refusing to latch onto her Tommee Tippee bottles. She chews on the teats and when milk builds up in her mouth, she swallows but she doesn’t latch on. It really puzzled us because she managed to take the bottle so early on and all of a sudden refused to take it the past two weeks. I’m so thankful to not be working right now, I wouldn’t know how to deal with this if I still had full time work! We tried Pigeon’s Soft Touch bottles as my mum swore by this brand when we were younger and at $20 a bottle, you’d think every baby would take to this brand. The verdict is in and she still absolutely hates it! We are still determined to continue trying.

The donations of Kenzie’s clothes she grown out of and my maternity clothes have begun. I’m so surprised at how quickly babies grow out of their clothes! Two weeks of wear and they grow out of it already! We’ve found that Bonds Wondersuits, Best and Less singlets and overall dresses (from Seed and Zara) have lasted the longest.

We’ve started to notice Kenzie has wanted to sit down, be upright or standing on her feet as oppose to lying on her back. She can now go 10 minutes on tummy time before she goes ballistic and she loves looking at herself in the mirror. We know that it may be too early to tell but we think she may already recognise people. When Ramon gets back from work and greets Kenzie, she pulls the biggest smile on her face! We’re impatiently waiting for her first giggle!

To prepare Kenzie for solids, we’ve purchased purée and a B.Box flexible spoon. How exciting!

Thanks to a massive warehouse sale, Christmas shopping is done and we stayed within budget! Unfortunately, thinking and planning ahead isn’t always the way to go as we’ve decided to do Secret Santa which means we’ve bought 6 gifts more than we needed. But hey, now we have birthday gifts sorted!

Our little precious girl is 4 months next week and due for her next lot of vaccinations! We are not prepared for her heartbreaking cries of pain. I wish we could take her place.
