Kenzie: Nineteen Weeks Old

by Camille Diamzon

Kenzie is nineteen weeks today and her final week before she’s into the 20s! Time sure does fly! Our license for this little girl is growing more and more each day. We still have to pinch ourselves!

So far, here is her tally:
Nappy Changes: 43
Sleep: 88 hours
Feeds: 81

Our gorgeous daughter had quite the eventful week this week. We went to the regional park, visited Rouse Hills’ “Hills Illuminate” Christmas event, finally got her vaccinations and attended a birthday party!

Speaking  of vaccinations, we decided to book it for a Wednesday so that I could have Ramon’s help if Kenzie became unsettled. The needles are so large and both Ramon and I have to look away with each jab in her thigh. She took it like a champ! She cried when the needles were injected but settled within a minute later. We monitored her during the days and are relieved that she has not experienced any after effects. She’s a trooper! We have to go back again when she is 6 months old and we are definitely not looking forward to it.

Kenzie is finally sitting on her own! Although she can only hold herself up for a good minute or so, it’s an amazing milestone! She loves sitting and prefers it to lying down. She absolutely loves to stand and dance. She doesn’t quite know how to lift her legs yet to simulate walking but I’m going to take whatever development she’s making so far. I can’t believe how much she has come in a week, yes, 7 days!

She has found her toes! She loves holding her toes and helps hold back her legs when we are changing her nappy. It’s so adorable! She holds her toes when she is sitting upright and she also manages to find her toes in the bath tub. She’s also starting to splash about in the tub and is playing with her bath toys! This week has sure been a joy!

Kenzie’s hand and eye coordination is getting there. She’s able to grab hold of anything and everything in front of her and manages to put it in her mouth after a few goes. She’s also been watching us intensely while we are eating and drinking. She’s been able to grab cutlery, dinner plates and drink bottles. We’ve bought her some educational sensory toys so hopefully her subconscious will pick up colours, textures and noises.

I’ve reintroduced the sippy cup and she loves holding onto the handles while drinking from the bottle! We plan to exclusively feed breastmilk via bottle when she starts solids so we wanted to get her used to a cup early. She is finding it hard to get a hang of and our laundry has doubled as she gets milk everywhere. Let’s see how she copes when we introduce solids in January!

My mum has become a pro at feeding Kenzie a bottle and putting her to sleep for a nap with some nursery rhymes. Kenzie adores her so much! My dad has been able to get her to sleep in her bouncer for nap times during the day. I’ve been so grateful as it helps Ramon and I take a little breather and regroup so that Kenzie will only see the best from us. Her grandparents sure do spoil her! My mum bought her a paddling pool and she loves every inch of it! Unfortunately, as we’ve been experiencing a heatwave, we haven’t been able to splash about in the paddling pool again but I’m sure with the weather shift, we’ll have plenty of time to do that in the near future.

We have been introducing Kenzie to all sorts of different people so that she becomes a people-person now that she is starting to get to know who is a stranger and who is not. So far she’s stopped getting too upset when someone is near her or holds her but she is not very happy and will tolerate them to a certain degree. In a couple of weeks she will meet some of her aunties and uncles for the first time so it’s a super exciting time!

Kenzie is enjoying all this Christmas cheer from the songs which help her with nap times to the lights on the Christmas tree and outside the houses. We can’t wait till we can take her to Carols by Candlelight (a favourite of mine from my childhood). Kenzie is so wide-eyed and alert! She loves being forward-facing in her carrier and pram. She’s taking in each and every moment and I love that about her. She’s my little sponge who just wants to absorb everything she can.

Kenzie has developed a cute habit where she will nap in the car with Barney songs and while she is holding someone’s finger. Sydney traffic is really bad during the holiday period so anything that will help settle her is a godsend!

We cannot live without Kenzie being in a onesie with cuff fold mittens as her nails grow super fast and she’s constantly scratching her face at night and pulling on her hair. It’s so concerning when she does this! We know it’s all a part of how she is coping with her teething but she’s got such a strong grip. We’re hoping this habit would pass quickly.

Christmas is next week! What an exciting time. She’s 20 weeks old soon and I thank God each and every day.
